World Teachers Day

October 5 - #WorldTeachersDay

Waited for months to post this on an appropriate day So far my favorite "teaching moment" this year was on March 27th at Guimaras State University, when I was invited to speak to Entrepreneurship students about entrepreneurial skills needed in today's age.

I admit. I get overwhelmed and burnt out now as an entrepreneur so I was wondering if I was still qualified to talk about skills. I walked around the campus and met the teachers, the faculty, and the dean, and I was shaking the whole time. I hadn't felt nervous for so long. The students were so polite, greeting me as I made my way to their hall. I felt they looked up to me as if I am this role model entrepreneur that they couldn't wait to listen to. This made my hands extra cold 🥶

As I talked, I realized I didn't run out of words. I even captured their attention, and they were also keen enough to take down notes.

"Don't!" I began when I saw them writing down. "Don't take down notes yet. Listen to me carefully. I only have less than an hour to narrow down my more than 10 years of experience to you. Just listen. You will use this when you get out of this four-walled classroom. I promise you can make mental notes as I talk. Just journal all you've found impressive once we're through."

I wondered where all my words came from, as my brain was totally empty the night I did my presentation. See, this is what I love about teaching: my audience and I both learn. They learn from my presentation, and I learn things about myself that I hadn't known before. Sometimes I doubt myself, but seeing these students carefully listen to me is a pivotal moment that assures me I'm still credible in the industry. Due to living slow, my lessened contact with the internet and social media had cut some of my ties and connections, however, I am always appreciative of people who reach out to me because they believe in what I can do.

For me, I will always be a lifelong student. I make sure I learn something new everyday. The question "Wala ka ni ya kabalo??" (You don't know an inch about this??") taught me not to be afraid to admit that I don't know things. I don't care if I only learn things today. I have an entire lifetime to learn. We are only a dot in this world. THERE IS SO MUCH TO LEARN IN THIS EARTH. If there are no teachers, we will never learn.

Teachers don't only take the form of humans. They can be relationships, experiences, struggles and challenges. But our human teachers are one of the best medium of learning. I am pleased and humbled to take part in being a teacher once in a while.

In what ways have you become a teacher? Isn't it a lovely moment when you can impart things you know to others?

Happy World Teachers Day!
